Orthodontic Emergency Care

While orthodontic treatment is generally smooth, minor issues can occasionally arise. Whether it’s a loose bracket or a poking wire, Hunt & Falter Orthodontics is here to help you manage these situations promptly and comfortably.

Orthodontic emergencies fall into two main categories:

  • Problems related to your braces or orthodontic appliances

  • Direct injuries to the mouth or teeth

Here’s how to handle each scenario until we can see you in the office.

Emergencies Involving Braces or Appliances

Sometimes your orthodontic appliance may become bent, broken, or loose. While these aren’t usually serious emergencies, they can cause discomfort and should be addressed as soon as possible.

Please call our office during patient hours to schedule an appointment. We are unable to accommodate walk-ins to ensure scheduled patients receive proper care.

Common appliance issues and quick fixes

  • Poking wire: Use orthodontic wax to cover the tip, or gently bend it back into place with a pencil eraser or Q-tip.

  • Loose bracket or band: Leave it in place and avoid touching it. Call our office to schedule a repair during regular hours.

  • Broken archwire: If the wire is irritating your mouth, you can try trimming it with clean nail clippers or pushing it into a more comfortable position. Contact us to evaluate and repair the issue.

If you’re unsure how to manage the problem, don’t hesitate to call—we’ll guide you step-by-step.

Direct Injuries to the Mouth or Teeth

In the event of a trauma or injury to the mouth, whether you’re wearing braces or not, it’s important to act quickly:

  • Apply ice immediately to reduce swelling

  • Contact your family dentist as soon as possible

  • An X-ray may be necessary to assess the extent of the injury

If a tooth has been:

  • Loosened or displaced

  • Fractured or knocked out

Your general dentist is the best first point of contact, as their office is equipped to handle dental trauma. After your dentist has treated the injury, contact our office so we can adjust or replace any orthodontic appliances affected by the impact.

After-Hours Orthodontic Emergencies

If you experience a situation after hours that involves significant pain or urgent discomfort, don’t wait.

Please call our office and follow the recorded instructions for after-hours assistance. You’ll be directed to the appropriate contact or provided with guidance to get the help you need.
